One Horticulture was founded by Dr Ersin Atay to bridge the gap between applied research and orchard practice. Grounded in the physiology of temperate fruit trees, we translate research findings into a practical understanding of how orchards function — enhancing tree performance, regulating yields, and supporting long-term sustainability.
While high-density apple orchards form the scientific core, our approach provides transferable insights across temperate fruit species, helping growers better understand the link between biological processes and orchard performance.
KEY RESEARCH AREAS
We explored how pruning strategy and cultivar behaviour interact to regulate vegetative–generative balance and return bloom. Our research shows that pruning techniques directly influence yield variation: short-pruning approaches may increase the risk of biennial bearing, while long-pruning approaches support consistent flowering and production.
We preserve beneficial native root-associated microorganisms whenever possible and use biostimulants when necessary to restore ecological functions, improve tree nutrition, and strengthen orchard resilience.
We are selecting and developing cultivars and rootstocks adapted to changing environmental conditions, with a focus on long-term orchard productivity.
We investigate how fruit trees respond to environmental stresses, with a primary focus on drought adaptation. Our research also addresses salinity, flooding, and other abiotic factors that influence long-term orchard resilience.
Mainly focusing on almond trees, we are discovering how root system characteristics and soil management influence productivity under limited water availability, with an emphasis on drought-tolerant temperate fruit species.
EMERGING RESEARCH DIRECTION
We examine how fruit trees can be integrated with biodiversity and complementary production systems to create more resilient agricultural landscapes. Our research focuses on agroforestry concepts and regenerative production pathways that improve ecosystem function, resource-use efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
